Summer Collection 2016: Behind the Scenes
Posted on 17 February 2016
Our Summer Collection 2016 is now available in store. Today's post discusses the inspiration behind this collection. We have with us, Preethi, our founder and designer. She talks about her inspiration and hopes for this collection.
What inspired you to create this collection?
My biggest inspiration was my childhood. I've tried to incorporate bright colors and positive text while making sure it's not over-the-top. Ultimately, my goal is to help the wearer feel happy and positive, not overwhelmed by the design.
Childhood is a part of us that is filled with nostalgia and happy memories. Through this collection, I've tried to bring back that sense of positivity and optimism. While the designs are bright and colorful, they're understated so, they can be worn by anyone, anytime. I've also tried to move away from the 'books' theme to appeal to a more universal audience.
What are some themes in your work?
As simplistic as it may sound, the main themes in my work are a love of books, sweet treats and colors. That really sums me up as a person. I'm a dessert and book lover. I wanted to share this part of myself with the world through this collection. I think these themes are universal and anybody can relate to them. After all, who doesn't like chocolate?
What is your design process?
I use Inkscape, an open source software to design. I think it works rather well for me. I like the simple layout that helps me visualize the text in different colors. I usually write down interesting words or phrases when they come to me. Once I have four or five good ones, I sit down to design them. I've used mostly text for this collection as I thought putting an image on top of the text would be too much. Ultimately, my aim is to make all designs wearable and versatile. They shouldn't be like the bright, ugly Christmas sweater that you only wear on Christmas. Versatility is key to good design.
What is a typical day in your life look like?
It's too early to say because Books & Ballad is just a month old. I work almost eighteen hours a day. Some days, I work twenty. From the moment I wake up to the moment I sleep, Books & Ballads is the only thing on my mind. Since we are in the first month, it's very busy. Things will get more relaxed as time passes but I'm enjoying every moment of it. I usually design in the afternoons after I'm finished with website maintenance and e-mails.
