10 Fashion Trends to Look Forward to in 2017

Posted on 16 February 2017

I love looking out for the next big thing, the must-have item, and ‘what’s hot’ and ‘what’s not’ lists. It’s not that I’m a huge follower of fashion or trends, but I like updating my wardrobe with an item or two rather than an entire overhaul.
The year ahead is an exciting one, whether you’re a girl who lives for her accessories or prefers making statements with a tee, there’s something for everyone. Dull complexions are as redundant as New Year’s resolutions and flat forms replace killer heels. What to know what else is hot? Read on to find out more.
  1. Nude skin
Not everyone will have heard of the naked guinea pig or the skinny pig, but it’s the must-have pet at the moment and is essentially a guinea pig with no hair. What has this got to do with fashion trends you ask? Well, 2017 is all about beautiful clear skin, and makeup to look like you’re not wearing any. Dull complexions are out, matte doesn’t matter, and nude skin is in.
  1. Tickled pink
You’ll be thrilled to know (or not) that pink is back in a big way, every hue and shade you can imagine. The good news is that it suits every skin tone and evokes feelings of romance and love.
  1. Ath-luxury
This one might be a difficult to get your head around, especially if you prefer tailored and chic. Ath-luxury is less street-wear and more elegance with ease. I love the idea of slouchy track pant-cum-trousers, finished off with heels or another hot accessory for 2017, the sneaker.
  1. Ear, Ear
Earrings are big in 2017, like literally. Bold and oversized, they’re best worn mix-matched and hanging down to your shoulders. You won’t go wrong if you don a pair on a night out; just remember the bigger, the better.
  1. Fashion activist
This is the year we can wear our hearts on our tees. Whether you’re making a political statement or a fun fashion one, slogans t-shirts are everywhere, and the little twist is that they’re paired with everything from gorgeous full skirts and formal pants to fun shorts and dungarees.
  1. Flatforms
Platforms and flatforms are back! While I’m not yet 100% sure how I feel about this particular trend, fashionistas have already embraced it. Wooden block heels, platforms, flatforms and even crocs are being seen everywhere. I might just stick to my sneakers.
  1. It’s all about utilitarian
Another fashion trend we see over and over again is utilitarian wear. Even when we think we’ve worn our cargo jacket for the last time and we’re ready to replace our shades of khaki, olive and nude (with pink) utilitarian wear manages to make a comeback. But, to be honest, I’m not complaining. And this year I’m looking forward to pairing my mechanic jumpsuit with my slogan tee.
  1. Big and bold stripes
Forget Sporty Spice, let’s talk sporty stripes. As classic as a plain white t-shirt, bold stripes are a hot trend for 2017, and you can expect to see them in all sorts of shapes and sizes and as well as bright, primary colors. For the brave fashionista, the idea is to mix and match different size stripes with different prints. The bolder, the better it seems for this trend.
  1. Oversized necklaces
Who was it that said, “Less is more”? They were wrong. Large, long and oversized necklaces are as popular as statement earrings, and you will see those in the know wearing neck pieces, including chokers and personalized designs as well as long, oversized pendants. Small and dainty isn’t going to cut it this year.
  1. Sneakers
You have no idea how happy this makes me because I’m a sneakers kind of girl through and through. Because they’re so versatile, they can be worn with absolutely anything, which means you can never have too many pairs. I have gold pairs and ones with leopard skin print. I have glittery ones, and for more formal occasions, I have my go-to satin pair. And if you want to be on fleek you’ll make sure you have platform sneakers for the year ahead.
Whatever trend you decide to make yours, whether it’s just one or all of them, my suggestion is always to have fun. After all, that’s what fashion is for, isn’t it?
